A university city

Belgrade is a university centre with two state universities (Belgrade University and the University of Arts) and there are also a number of private colleges. The city is the home of eminent scientific and research institutes in all disciplines, the most important being the Serbian Academy of Science and Arts, which was founded in 1886 as the Serbian Royal Academy.


Belgrade University

univbg.gifBelgrade University, the principal educational institution in Belgrade and Serbia, is comprised of 30 faculties, 8 scientific institutes and a library. It dates from 1808, when the High School (Velika škola) was founded in Belgrade. The first Serbian university was formerly opened on 27th February 1905 comprising three faculties: The Faculties of Philosophy, Law and Technical Sciences.

About 60,000 students are currently studying in Belgrade on about 150 different degree courses, as well as around 1,700 post-graduate students on master's degree courses and a significant number of students on specialist courses. Since its founding, Belgrade University has produced approximately 260,000 graduates in various disciplines, about 14,000 master's graduates and 8,500 with doctors degrees.

The first step towards the establishing of the University was the founding of the Academy of Music and the Academy of Arts (1937), along with the Academy of Applied Art and the Academy of Theatrical Arts (after the Second World War). In 1973 the Academy of Arts became the University of Arts. Today it has 4 faculties: the Faculty of Theatre Arts, the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Music, and the Faculty of Applied Art and Design.

Today about 1,800 students and 240 postgraduates study at the University. To date about 8,500 students have graduated from the University and about 1,700 graduates have obtained their master's degree. The teaching staff of the University numbers 420 of whom 28 have completed their doctorates.
