The political system
The political system in Serbia is based on multi-party parliamentary democracy. Serbia has a President, National Assembly and Government. Local government is organised according to the principles of local self-government through municipal or town assemblies, governments and administrative bodies.

The decisive moment in recent Serbian political history was 5th October 2000, when major post-electoral demonstrations lead to the fall of the communist system of government, unbroken for fifty years. Shortly after that Serbia returned to the fold of European democracy, after many years of isolation and sanctions.

Besides dozens of political parties there are also hundreds of NGOs and a large number of trade unions.
