Traffic regulations

The speed limit in built-up areas, unless otherwise indicated by traffic signs, is 60 km/h (35 mph).

Speed limits on roads outside populated areas are as follows:

  motorcycles and
passenger vehicles
passenger vehicles
towing caravans
on motorways 120 km/h (75 mph) 80 km/h (50 mph)
on major roads 100 km/h (60 mph) 80 km/h (50 mph)
on other roads 80 km/h (50 mph) 80 km/h (50 mph)

(conversions to mph are approximate, ensure you observe the kmh limit)

Children under 12 years old and persons under the influence of alcohol may not sit on the front seat of a passenger vehicle.

The driver blood alcohol level may not exceed 0.05%, while for professional drivers the limit is 0.0%.

Wearing of safety belts is compulsory for drivers and front seat passengers.

Motorcycle riders and passengers must wear a protective helmet whilst riding, including in town. Motorcycles must have their headlight switched on at all times of the day or night whilst riding.

Camping is permitted only in campsites.

Vehicles with foreign number plates must display the international licence code of the country in which they are registered.

Mandatory equipment: first aid kit, warning triangle, spare bulbs and tow rope.
